Scenes from Middle Earth - Composer Julian Breeze
Scene 1. “The tale of the Dwarves”
The setting is Bilbo’s hobbit hole where the dwarves tell the epic story of how their
treasure and homes were taken by the evil dragon, Smaug. This music is based on my
song “Far Away” which sets Tolkien’s lyrics.
Scene 2. “Riddles in the dark”
The scene is set deep inside a mountain and describes Bilbo’s deadly game of words with
the untrustworthy Gollum. This sinister music was used to accompany a narration,
melodrama and sung verses, with the tension rising with each round of the three riddles.
Scene 3. “The flight of the dragon”
This piece describes the impressive flight of the dragon, Smaug, on his journey to wreak havoc on the people of “Lake Town”. I “lifted” my
melody for this scene from the theme “Thanatos” which I wrote for a 1980s computer game about a flying dragon. This is a new arrangement,
but the original version is easily found on the internet along with many other versions which fans of the game have made – have a listen!
Scene 4. “The search for the Arkenstone”
In the dragon’s absence the dwarves reclaim their home in the “Lonely Mountain”. This short busy contrapuntal section represents the frantic
hunting of the dwarves as they strive to find a precious jewel prized by their leader.
Scene 5. “Roads go ever on”
This piece is an instrumental version of my setting of Tolkien’s poem of the same name. We are on the road home, and other themes from
the suite make an appearance as we reflect on our journey - “There, and back again”.
